About the Role
We are currently looking for a Cartage Team Leader Controller for one of our branches in DBN to lead, coordinate, and oversee the Durban cartage operation.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12.
- Relevant experience in fleet or cartage control, with demonstrated leadership ability.
- Navis experience and practical knowledge of Durban port operations.
- Strong computer literacy and practical Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience using ERP, vehicle tracking, camera, and fuel management systems.
- Knowledge of transport rates, route planning, trip costing and fuel efficiency.
- Basic knowledge of truck and trailer repairs, maintenance and common mechanical faults.
- Strong communication, problem-solving and time-management skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, take ownership and manage multiple operational priorities.
- Valid driver’s licence and own reliable vehicle.
- Willingness to work rotating day and night shifts, weekends and extended hours under the agreed working arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the Local, Long Distance and Third Man desks, ensuring effective planning, monitoring and shift coverage.
- Audit route plans, vehicle allocations and dispatch times to meet client requirements, reduce empty running and maximise fleet utilisation.
- Ensure accurate live updates on the company’s ERP system, including Last Vehicle Position reports, trip execution, driver registers and device utilisation.
- Oversee vehicle tracking, camera monitoring, driver communication and the prompt escalation of operational or safety concerns.
- Audit driver and vehicle performance, including trip counts, turnaround times, delays, kilometres travelled and revenue generated.
- Monitor fuel consumption, idling, additional fuelling and diesel costs against sales; investigate variances and implement corrective action.
- Review client rates and trip costs, identify unprofitable work and recommend improvements to routes, pricing and resource utilisation.
- Coordinate with the workshop on breakdowns, repairs, servicing, outstanding defects and vehicle downtime.
- Address driver and controller performance through clear instructions, coaching, documented follow-up and escalation to management where required.
- Oversee Navis bookings, import last free days, export stack closures, container movements and delivery deadlines.
- Ensure complete trip documentation, effective handovers and accurate daily management reports.
