Operations Controller – Container Transport

We are currently looking for an Operations Controller – Container Transport who will be responsible for the effective coordination and daily management of transport operations, with a strong focus on container-related transport, driver management, compliance, depot activities and Durban Container Terminal operations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • 1–2 years’ experience in logistics, transport, warehousing, administration or a similar environment.
  • Previous experience working with drivers will be advantageous.
  • Some exposure to container transport or depot operations is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of Durban logistics/port operations would be advantageous.
  • Computer literate.
  • Basic to intermediate MS Excel and MS Outlook skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of MS Packages

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily allocation and coordination of drivers.
  • Communicate trip instructions to drivers.
  • Monitor driver attendance and availability.
  • Record driver working hours and trip times.
  • Follow up with drivers regarding collection and delivery progress.
  • Escalate delays or problems to the Senior Controller/Operations Manager.
  • Assist with coordinating container collections and deliveries.
  • Track the movement of containers between terminals, depots and customers.
  • Follow up on outstanding collections and deliveries.
  • Capture container and trip information accurately.
  • Assist with resolving basic operational issues
  • Basic understanding of the Durban Container Terminal/Port environment.
  • Assist with coordinating port-related collections and deliveries.
  • Monitor driver progress and communicate delays.
  • Learn and understand terminal and depot procedures
  • Communicate with depots regarding container availability and movements.
  • Assist with confirming collection and delivery arrangements.
  • Record depot-related information and discrepancies.
  • Escalate any problems to the relevant senior staff member.
  • Provide customers with basic updates regarding deliveries and collections.
  • Communicate expected arrival times.
  • Notify customers of delays after receiving confirmation from the operations team.
  • Respond professionally to customer queries.
  • Assist with maintaining driver and vehicle documentation.
  • Check that required documents are available and valid.
  • Maintain accurate operational records.
  • Assist with filing and updating compliance information.
  • Assist with daily operational reports.
  • Capture trip information and driver times.
  • Update Excel spreadsheets.
  • Provide accurate information to management.
