Our client is seeking an experienced and certified Gangway Man / Signal Man to support safe and efficient vessel and cargo-handling operations within the port environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clear signals and communication during operational activities, assisting with the safe movement of personnel, equipment and cargo, and ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with required safety standards and operational procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Certified Gangway Man / Signal Man.
  • Minimum 2 years’ practical operational experience in a port, stevedoring, marine or cargo-handling environment.
  • Sound knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively via radio in:
    • IsiXhosa
    • English
    • Afrikaans
  • Must be comfortable and able to work at heights.
  • Proactive, self-motivated and demonstrates visible initiative and drive.
  • Willing and able to work shift work, operational hours and overtime when required.
  • Code 08 driver’s licence will be advantageous.
  • Must be residing in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) or surrounding areas.
  • Immediate availability is essential.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform Gangway Man / Signal Man duties safely and efficiently during vessel and port operations.
  • Provide clear and accurate hand signals and radio communication to crane operators, vessel personnel and operational teams.
  • Assist in coordinating the safe movement of cargo, equipment and personnel during loading and offloading operations.
  • Ensure all signalling and communication is conducted in accordance with client standards and safe operating procedures.
  • Maintain constant awareness of the surrounding operational environment, including vessels, cranes, forklifts, cargo and personnel.
  • Assist with safe access and movement around vessel and wharf-side operations where required.
  • Communicate operational instructions clearly and promptly via radio.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, hazards, equipment faults or incidents to the relevant supervisor.
  • Follow all port, vessel and client health and safety procedures.
  • Work closely with the Foreman, Crane Operators, Forklift Operators and other stevedoring personnel to ensure smooth and safe operations.
  • Maintain a high level of concentration and situational awareness throughout operations.
  • Complete any required operational documentation or reporting.
  • Carry out additional operational duties as required by the Foreman or management.
